It felt as though my bones were cracking with each movement of her eyes as she appeared to view me with bemusement.

Capturing the other end of the telescope lens was like writhing in agony and I needed to escape, but the social customs wouldn’t allow me to leave her company.

There wasn’t much else a strange, little widow like she was could do to me, but it felt intense enough to be worth its own merit in torture.

I had no idea why her stares prickled my skin and turned my stomach, but we weren’t alone and my companion seemed oblivious of the little woman’s efforts to soak in my life essence like a vacuum.  Chattering away, he was just pleased to not be interrupted….certainly not noticing that no one was listening and I doubt he would have really cared if he knew. Just to have the ears to hear and the ability to blabber on without stopping pleased him so.

When the time finally arrived such that I could run into the other room with an “excuse me” and a slide out the door, I sat down only to look up and see her beside me.

“Why do you smell so good?” the little widow asked.

“Why do you stare so hard?” I replied in turn with a question, rather than an answer to the query I found to be most distasteful…. Didn’t she realize that I couldn’t stand to be around her?

Her nose was at my neck and her teeth scraped at my skin until I said….”You are not invited in…”

With that she vanished, leaving only a scratch on my neck and one droplet of blood that I caught with my white shirt sleeve. A stain as a reminder of her lust.

Good riddance to that annoying widow, I thought.  It was time for me to go find my own feast….

Truth vs. Illusion

The bloody wake of ego was a regular occurrence, but on this particularly beautiful night, the stars were quite delirious in their stage presence as the moon was nowhere to be found to steal their glory.

Separated by the haze of the long forgotten beasts whose ravenging feasts send up clouds of souls in various parts of the earth, the sky was shared by all and some saw the clouds while others betook the stars as they floated mightily above.

Exhaustion overtook Evelyn immediately after consuming her prey, but her brethren wished for photographic results nonetheless and so she smiled for the camera.

Her eyes always glowed red after feasting, but her body, which would soon be stronger from the consumption needed a rest as the blood processed and flowed through her aching veins.

Her choice to become a vampire can its price tag, the same as all others of her species now, but she relished the acceptance of these prices for the benefits far outnumbered all else.

She was never again the weakling she had once been, nor the prey of other’s malicious attempts to use her for their own posterity and evil glee. Now the predators were the delicious prey and she felt proud of the choices she had made to get to this point in her life.

The photography most certainly did include her in it and she was uncertain where the rumors had begun about vampires not showing up in photographs, but such lies worked only to her benefit and those of her beloved race.
